Skinny Tip: Giving In vs. Resistance: What’s Your Habit?
Do you remember training really hard as a kid for a gymnastics meet or a ballet recital? You may have spent hundreds of hours on the beam or at the barre, perfecting your technique. This isn’t unusual. Anything worthwhile takes time and dedication to master. The moment you stopped practicing, your skills probably went downhill.
Losing weight is no different. The IT Girls put in a lot of time and effort building good habits.
Tell yourself every time actually does matter. It’s not necessarily the calories (after all, 3 pretzels are not very caloric); it’s the HABIT. Every time you eat something you weren’t planning to eat, you strengthen your GIVING IN muscle, which makes it more likely that the next time you’ll give in, and the time after that. And every time you stick to your plan when you’re tempted to give in, you strengthen your RESISTENCE muscle, which makes it more likely that the next time you’ll resist, and the time after that.
Losing weight and staying slim isn’t just about eating the right foods in the right amounts. It’s about building and continually practicing good habits. Sometimes you need to say “NO”, so you can say, “YES!” when you step on the scale or zip up those skinny jeans. As I tell my clients, “Every NO is ALWAYS followed by a YES!”
